Packed up the contents of my desk, gathered for cookies with my Forum cohorts, worked a shift at a women’s expo, began training at my new work space — all these I will have done by the time you read this.
But as I write, they’ve yet to take place. In anticipation of an intense couple weeks of leaving past for future, I’m working ahead. When this posts, I’ll be immersed in the details of my new position, and by midweek, above the clouds heading for a conference in Indianapolis to help prepare for my new life.
This will be my first visit to Indiana. There, I’ll be introduced to other Catholic communications from across the country who will welcome me into my new world. Some of them will be strangers. Others, I’ve known for years through a Catholic writers’ email list. Of those, some have been only names while others, friends with whom I’ve been in close contact and will meet for the very first time in person.
I’m a believer in conferences. I thrive on the chance to focus on improving my craft and professional skills through mingling with others in my field from other places. I love being inspired by presenters and engaging in meaningful discussions. I enjoy getting out from behind the computer and touching base with the world, having the chance to engage in a way that will be beneficial to me and what I will bring to my work.
Well, it’s that and the clouds, too. Anyone who has been hanging with me in the past couple years knows of my affinity for the sky and its daily offerings of creative presentations. My father used to wake up my sister and me in the middle of the night to watch lightning storms, as if we had arrived at a magnificent fireworks display. I’m fairly certain that’s what started it all. I can’t get enough of the sky.
And so I’m ready; ready for clouds. Ready for them to lead me out of my home and into another place, where I will have the opportunity to stretch and learn and bring all of that fantastic energy back to my new job in Fargo.
I know there will be something from my journey to bring here, too, and you can be sure I will. Meantime, I would love your prayers for a safe journey and transition.
Q4U: Which clouds will you be gazing upon this summer?

Roxane, this is amazing. Just before I began reading your post I had looked out our bedroom window – it’s also where I write – at the beautiful summer sky with its clouds on this, the longest day of the year. Prayers for a safe journey, a wonderful time in Indiana, and your transition into your new position.

Barbara, that IS amazing. I feel like we connected through the miles, through those clouds. The prayers are much appreciated, as is your well-wishing. Most of all, thank you for stopping by!
