I honestly can’t remember a colder winter in all the years I’ve lived up North. Which has been all of them, the majority in the middle of the country where we’re especially vulnerable.
Our youngest sons went on an adventure to Park Rapids, Minn., this weekend to Boy Scout “winter camp.” After the first day, though, they were booted out due to winter conditions. Go figure!
Now, we’re dealing with the latest blizzard and cold extremities. Sunday morning, we learned of the rupture (and explosion) of a natural gas line in Canada that may well put many of our friends and possibly the whole region in danger. We do not use gas, but we know that if this problem worsens, it could be catastrophic.

So, time to hunker down with the family and try to conserve warmth and energy and hope that we can ride this thing out. I used to say this part of the country builds strong character, but I’m beginning to lose my resolve. It’s just plain brutal.
Sunnier thoughts soon!

That sounds terrible ! The extreme cold and the gas explosion . After a hard winter last year, we here in yorkshirev are having a very mild, but wet winter…no snow yet . And my daughter in Milan , Italy shows me , on Skype, her garden bathed in beautiful winter sunshine ! What a world of contrasts…praise God . Anyway you keep warm, spring will come.

Indeed, Denis, there is beauty in the contrasts. It is not a stoic world, always the same, always predictable and utilitarian. The thought of mild winters and gardens woke me up and put me in an optimistic state of mind. Thank you!

Driving through the storm yesterday gave me a whole new appreciation for the harsh and yet beautiful winter wonderland in which we live. I’m just watching those rays of sunshine stretch a bit further each day and longer into the darkness and am feeling the hope for warmer days ahead!
