“Look Mommy, I’m a Mommy!” — Child #5, male, age 3
I’m more than a bit red-faced as I write this post, all things considered. A word of warning to all: if you, like me, find it utterly impossible to get to the bottom of your laundry pile, and if your laundry pile is near your office, and your 3-year-old likes hanging out near you and enjoys digging around in the laundry (which, to him, is not unlike a big pile of freshly raked leaves), and if something interesting should catch his eye one day, an article of clothing, perhaps, an undergarment, and if curiosity gets the best of him and he tries it on and actually knows how it works and where it’s supposed to go, and in all of his excitement, he shouts the above phrase, what else will you be able to do but put down your work, laugh out loud, and run to find the camera. It also might occur to you that this photo could provide an opportunity for the future. You never know when you might need it, say, years from now, perhaps at his roast when he’s 45. Nevertheless, for this moment, as you look into his shining eyes of innocence, you feel gratitude that even on the most seemingly boring days you can’t call your life mundane because, well, you just never know what surprises you’ll find when you walk around a corner, or up the stairs, or into the kitchen, or when you look up from your work. As for your son, for now all he’s thinking is, “Yee haw, Ma!”
