My kids often refer to my alphabet book as the “butterfly book,” based on its beautiful cover by award-winning illustrator Joanna Yardley. Published in 2005 by Sleeping Bear Press as part of its “Discover America State by State” series, the book (real title: P is for Peace Garden: A North Dakota Alphabet) has been a true source of pride for me in the years that have followed. As a gal with deep North Dakota roots, the chance to research and write about our Peace Garden State brought many hours of pleasure. In 2006, the book was honored by being chosen by children as a winner of the Flicker Tale Award. Soon, it will have a chance to fly again through being part of a charity event organized by Altrusa International. The event will bring books and bookshelves to homes built by Habitat for Humanity. If you live in the area and will be around on November 15, please join us at Barnes & Noble. I’ll be there signing “butterfly books” and would love to see you. I’ll post another reminder and more information as the day draws closer. In the meantime, find more information on the blog of event organizer Dara Vadnie.
