As a relatively new blogger (since January), I’m still trying to find my way around the blog world, and one of the questions I’ve been asking myself lately is, how much is enough? Do my readers expect a post a day, or will every couple of days be adequate? I’ve been doing some reading online, and many of the writers on this subject argue that posting daily or even more than once daily does not necessarily meet readers’ needs and expectations; that, in fact, information overload can cause readers to fade away. What I’ve tried to do is vary my posts, creating short entries in between longer rants, rotating words and photos, throwing in a poem or two when the muse demands it. Though I started with the goal of weekly posts, as readers have increased, I’ve upped my posts in an attempt to keep up with readers. But I’d really like to know what my readers prefer, or what other bloggers think about this topic and what they do to sort through it…(long pause)…

Sorry. I lost my train of thought there. Just got caught up in watching Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live (click above link if you missed it). Actually, I’m studying Palin’s wardrobe so I can figure out what to wear to a costume party on October 31. I’m still smiling at one reader’s suggestion that I used self-flattery in last week’s parenting column in The Forum. It was my husband, not I, who made the physical comparison. But now, I’m challenged to come as close as I can, so…a trip to the hair salon and Target for some fake, rim-less glasses are in order, I guess. Oh, and ruby red lipstick, of course. One question I have is, will I have enough time to practice my Midwestern accent? I live here, but Sarah’s got it down better than I do. The other question is, will hubby go as McCain, or Todd Palin? I don’t think he could pull off Joe Biden.
Okay, I’m back, and truly interested in what you think. Readers? Fellow bloggers? Does frequency matter?
I’m listening with great interest.

The topic of blogger frequency has often come to my mind as well. I think it’s whatever you are comfortable with. Some days, I just don’t have anything to write about, or am not in the mood. I look for new entries on the blogs I follow almost daily, so I think you are right on with once a day, or every couple of days. I sure hope more people respond, because I would like to hear input from others.

Marie,
Thanks. There were a few more comments on the area voices post. I think you’ll appreciate what these readers/bloggers had to say.
I appreciate your input, too. ๐

I wrestle with the same issues. I try to post something every day, but often I’ll use photos or quotes if I need something “light” and quick. I know lots of other bloggers post repeatedly throughout the day, but that’s not the style of blog I write. I think my readers are OK with the mostly-daily blog posts. I hear from a lot of them they don’t have time to check every day, so they check every few days and just read back posts until they catch up.

I’m impressed you find the time to write as much as you do! My feeling is when you have something to say – say it! And yes, you should totally go as Sarah Palin for Halloween! Take pictures!!!

Lori,
Hey, thanks for the “endorsement.” Tee hee. ๐ It will be fun. Are you going as someone or something, or just dressing up the kiddos?

I haven’t dressed up in years! Shaelin is dressing up as a princess – of course. Owen will be dressed as a Baby Bjorn – well he’ll be in it…
