When our family stepped out this past weekend for a pre-Easter dinner, we let out a collective giggle as we drove past a house that included these hockey Snowpeople. I smiled as I envisioned the family who created them outside on a snowy “spring” day, putting their artistry to work even while knowing the doom of their creations was sealed. Still, to me the image says most loudly: “Here is a family who just spent time having fun together,” and I smiled again.
I also smiled when a friend of mine presented me with a small clay pot that she’d filled with soil and seeds — an Easter gift. “Sorry, they just haven’t taken this year,” she apologized. True enough, there were only a few slight signs of green amid the seed kernels and dirt. But within hours the kids and I began to see more green, and more, and just 72 hours later I captured this shot of our cat getting its first sniff of spring from our potted present. It continues to grow at a rapid pace, reminding us all that although our yard remains filled with snow, it won’t be long before we’ll be spending our hours at the pool and stopping for midday breaks at the park. And at this thought, too, I smile.
Regardless of how we feel about winter in this part of the country (and I suspect most of us who have lived here for some time are mostly accustomed to it), I think this “spring” we moms are all in agreement: it’s time. We’re ready for the delights of warm sunshine on our faces, and to let our kids out of the coop to run through the fresh air. So, while we watch snowpeople lose their eyes and hair and melt down to knobs while keeping tabs on the quickly growing, potted spring grass on our windowsills, we say: Bring it on!
