This morning I woke to my husband’s proclamation, “Well, you are now famous for breastfeeding.” Huh? I thought in a sleepy fog. And then I remembered: It’s Tuesday, the day the nursing column is to be published. As I went through my day I was grateful to have heard from myriad friends who shared their own nursing mishaps and obstacles and, ultimately, triumphs. I want to share a few of them here:
“I just read your column, and I just have to say–Amen, Sister! I nursed both my girls, in Boulder where things are supposed to be progressive, and had only a few awkward moments. I remember with my first, being up at 2 a.m. and zoning in front of the TV while I nursed her. There was some awful show with an “exotic dancer” who’d had her breasts enlarged to truly a grotesque size. I thought, “No, that’s not what they’re for!” Thanks for your efforts at raising awareness.”
Here is an excerpt from another:
“Great article…I have also nursed all four of my children, my oldest until she was 4 years old, my youngest until she was 1 year old and the two in between until they were two and a half (I only stopped with them because I was 5 months pregnant and really had no choice). At times I feel guilty for not breastfeeding my baby longer but she is just as healthy as I could of asked for. I talk to anyone who will listen about the benefits of breastfeeding. I nursed my babies in public many times and never felt embarrassed or ashamed – I would have felt both if I chose to NOT breastfeed and prop a bottle in their mouth as they sat in their car seat. I tell women that it is such a bonding experience and nothing more satisfying to see your beloved child fall asleep in your arms because your OWN milk was so satisfying that they are now sleeping so blissfully.”
There have been more than these but that’s a sampling, and I know I, too, could write so much more on this topic, and probably will in the coming months. For now, you can see my article by clicking on the link below in the next week. After that it will be archived. Scroll down the list of writers to find my name then click on the title to access the article.
I would love to hear more thoughts if there are any out there. 🙂
